In November 2023, leading abortion research experts and representatives from four institutions in Southwestern Nigeria met at Ibadan to discuss strategies for institutional strengthening for abortion research and advocacy. At the forum, four priority areas were identified as central to institutional efforts in reducing unsafe abortion in Nigeria and strengthening evidence-based approaches to abortion policy. They are Advocacy, Programme, Policy, and Funding.
In February 2024, PAARRUAN successfully organised its first National forum with participation from
academic institutions, relevant non-governmental organisations, Government representatives, and
the Guttmacher Institute. The forum featured the presentation of scientific evidence on unsafe
abortion and unintended pregnancies in Nigeria from diverse disciplines and perspectives.
This year, the focus is on “Unplanned Pregnancy and Abortion Decision/Contexts in Nigeria.” An
experts meeting will discuss strategies for advancing PAARRUAN’s mandate in Nigeria, focusing
on priority areas for the partnership. The Second National Forum will feature scientific paper
presentations from scholars, non-governmental organisations, and representatives from the
Government, among others.
